Understanding Reactivity in Dogs

Reactivity in dogs occurs when your pup has a disproportionate response—like loud barking, lunging, growling—to a non-threatening, everyday trigger. The first time you witness such a reaction, it might be scary, confusing and difficult to decide what to do next.

The thing to remember is that a reactive dog isn’t a “bad” dog. Their outbursts might be scary, but they’re often motivated by fear, frustration or overstimulation. The right training and support can help your dog overcome these issues, and that’s where Sit Means Sit is ready to step in.

Zones of Reactivity

What Reactive Behavior in Dogs Looks Like

Reactivity can look different from dog to dog, and it is not really specific to any particular breed or age group. Many professionals recognize several “zones of reactivity” to help gauge the severity of a dog’s responses. This chart highlights common body language cues seen in reactive dogs. By identifying reactivity, you can better understand dog behavior and respond appropriately.

Reacting to Reactive Dogs

One overreaction can quickly become a habit, and it’s crucial to break the cycle of reactivity the right way. Using science-backed, attention-based techniques, we can teach your dog to:

  • Look to you in potentially triggering situations, reinforcing the bond between dog and owner.
  • Learn impulse-control cues like “look at that,” “leave it”, “settle,” and your trusty “sit” and “stay” commands.
  • Feel confident in different scenarios by training in a variety of environments.

This consistent structure, positive support and personalized attention will enable your dog to feel safe choosing better behaviors and reactions. We’ll also coach you on how to reinforce this progress at home.

See Why Cincinnati Dog Owners Love Sit Means Sit

Our puppy Guinness had some bad habits and having never raised a puppy, we needed help. We had a trainer come to our house for awhile, but there seemed to be little progress. Sit Means Sit Cincinnati was a lifesaver. While Guinness still has plenty to learn, his training made a big improvement and the fact that we can take part in group classes for no additional charge is awesome! Guinness loves to see all the dog trainers, they are a great group!
We have been so happy with our experience at Sit Means Sit Cincinnati! The dog trainers treat our pup like one of their own. Our dog loves going to his follow up classes each week, and we LOVE all the progress he has made and continues to make!
Perfect! I really thought I was going to have to rehome Nelson. He was so reactive and his prey drive was excessive. Had done several other obedience classes elsewhere (and they were good) but Sit Means Sit Cincinnati’s 10 day Board and Train did the job. We are meshing so well. I am so much more confident with my 90 pound Serbian German Shepherd than I would ever have thought possible. I am so in love with this dog I cannot wait to start our day hikes this spring. We’re not perfect yet but I have high hopes!
